ABOUT US
Sue left the enduring legacy of the Sue deVries Cancer Foundation, begun in her last year. Today, the Sue deVries Cancer Foundation is flourishing in the capable hands of five cherished friends who share Sue’s vision of providing support, education and hope to people with cancer. Judi Karas, Andrea York, Larisa Forman, Jodi Lapointe and Danielle Jacobs have brought Sue’s Circle of Hope – an offshoot of the Greater Boston’s Wellness Community - to the North Shore. It is a professional reality at 76 Lafayette Street in Salem - the haven of comfort and healing Sue envisioned.
Having co-sponsored, underwritten and staged fundraiser after fundraiser in the two years since Sue’s death, the five energetic, buoyant, busy women have raised upwards of $100,000 to put the Foundation on firm footing. They have enlisted the support of their spouses, children, community organizations, corporate sponsors, friends and new benefactors in their quest for partners in their grassroots crusade.
The group has staged bike rides, tennis tournaments, walks, kids’ events and a stunning Gala attended by 300 at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead – complete with a spectacularly successful live and silent auction.
“So many people want to help – everyone felt Sue was their best friend,” Danielle Jacobs, says. Ethan Forman, Larisa’s husband, leads the annual Sea Glass bike ride, which grew from the nucleus of Sue’s Pan Mass Challenge cycling group. The North Shore Jewish Community Center shares the proceeds of their 1K Kids’ Run. A party planner and caterer underwrote their services for the Gala; valuable gifts poured in for the auction. Every Sunday for an entire summer, Danielle Jacobs taught Yoga on the Beach, donating the gifts of participants. Marblehead’s Yoga Loft donates a class to the Foundation. Private donations and participation are welcome.
The 2008 Gala scheduled for May 9 at Kernwood Country Club, Salem, promises to be another memorable, annual event staged by the group. The community is enthusiastically invited to celebrate Sue’s pioneering vision, the Sue deVries Cancer Foundation
